6:06 am
they could be seen for miles. that's where julia hall was when she spotted the smoke. and i said is it our house? they said yeah. the house she spent 25 years in was burning, quickly disappearing before her eyes. as if that wasn't enough, the fire spread from her home to her neighbor's house. >> it appears that the fire started in the carport between the two houses, ran up the side of the house and then got into the attic of both house. >> her neighbor, who is on vacation, only had damage to the garage and attic. the brunt of the fire was focused here. at one point the house was so unstable firefighters were forced to pull out of it. they worried it could collapse. >> the attic space caught fire, and there was a series of explosions. i think the tires on the vehicle were popping. i think the windows on the house blew out. so it was pretty intense for a while. >> crews were fighting the fire from above, but they couldn't stop it.

6:32 am
as it is engulfed in flames. a driver passing by took these two photos. soon after that, just about after ten last night, sky 7hd shows the scene of the wreckage. the limo was carrying nine women from alameda to foster city when smoke start the coming out of the back of the limo. as the drive pulled over to see what was going on, the smoke quickly turn into flames. he was able to escape. four of the passengers also got out of the limo in time, but the other five were trapped inside and killed. here's what the chp tells us what happened right before the women lost their lives inside the limo. >> the driver was able to get out. some good samaritans did stop and assist and try to pull people from the fire. but it was a situation -- we have no idea actually what happened yet. it's still under investigation.
6:33 am
>> it is still not clear where the women were going last night. we do know they were from cities all across the bay area. the all of them, the survivors and victims were, were in their 30s and early 40s. they were taken to the sanford hospital and valley medical center for smoke inhalation and burns. the driver is cooperating with authorities. they let him go home to get some rest. they will be questioning him today and over the next several days. they also hope once the women are a little less shaken, a little bit more removed from the traumatic situation, that they, too, can answer questions for authorities how the fire started, where exactly it started and how it quickly spread to become such a deadly fire. reporting live in san mateo, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> that would be valuable information. thank you, kira. police in contra costa county are investigating after two people died in a head-on traffic collision yesterday afternoon.

6:35 am
>> my roadblock of justice was a punch in the gut when i learned about the law in california. >> california families who have received experienced death or injury due to medical malpractice say it's time to eliminate the quarter million dollars cap set nearly four decades ago. they have teamed up with consumer watch dogs to get lawmakers to change it or else they will get a ballot measure ready for 2014 to let voters decide. >> you eliminate the cap, it's a risky maneuver. doctors say removing the limit will result in skyrocketing healthcare costs. plus they predict meritless lawsuits will drive physicians to other states just as obamacare takes effect. >> we don't want to upset the applecart when we are trying to increase access for medical care. >> they point out they have other ways to recover lost wages and punitive dams which don't have measures. or don't have limits. interesting it was jerry brown who signed the cap into law in 1975 when i was governor the first time around. he may have a chance to change

6:42 am
images will travel through the eyes to key optical pathways in the brain. >> they discovered by changing wavelengths by filters, they could actually cause better communication between the two sides of the brain. >> the lenses have been used to treat problems of color perception or reading disorders for years, but the doctor who serves on the board of governors for the san francisco optimetric society said the use for dyslexia is a departure because most experts consider the condition neurological in origin. >> dyslexia is treated by a learning specialist. optomotrists treats not in efficiencies of the system such as focusing, and tracking. >> and lack of research supporting the effectiveness in treating dyslexia. so far there's been just one large scale study of 150 dyslexic students sponsored by the company which claims the lenses helped more than half of those students. but supporters like dr. swanson believe there will be a growing body of evidence as use of the lenses becomes more widespread. >> it's too new. it's very, very new.
6:43 am
>> it's back from the road. >> i am a believer because i've seen it work. >> and carolyn said the cost of the lenses, including having them fitted, runs between $700 and $1,000. despite the fda approval, they are typically not covered by insurance. >> lisa argen here now with our preview of the accuweather forecast. >> it feels like below normal considering where we were. we were well above. around seasonal norms today. look at the cloud cover. we have breezy win and the possibility of a few showers visiting us in the days ahead. i will explain and have the temperatures next. >> also ahead, another walk-off home run against the giants. mike

6:47 am
series against the san^antonio spurs. lisa is here to talk about not sports, but weather. >> yesterday the temperatures tumbled, compliments of the winds and clouds. we are left with partly about to mostly cloudy conditions with a few showers offshore you can see right here. this is the beginning of an area of low pressure that will continue to travel off the coast. once it does, it will perhaps send more moisture our way tomorrow. here's a look at the bay bridge where you can see the cloud cover. a few peaks of sun. 57 downtown. 59 in san carlos, 59 half moon bay with mid-50s in santa cruz. a little window sutro camera and the winds out of the south will continue today, adding to the cool down. we are looking at numbers right around normal, 60s and 70s. but with the wind it will feel cooler. 56 in livermore with some sunshine with 57 union city. mid-50s in napa and santa rosa. so our forecast highlights, cloudy skies this morning with the wind advisory along the

coast, all the way down to the santa cruz mountains. wind gusts perhaps up to 45 miles an hour. more common 20 to to 30 mile-an-hour winds. we will look for the chance of showers from the afternoon tomorrow until about 9:00, 10:00 as the low continues to set up offshore. wind gusts across the bay area, notice from the belta to the north bay, oakland, san carlos, even livermore, over 20 miles an hour. close to 30 mile-an-hour gusts from mountain view. not much of a problem now in san jose or santa rosa, but the windiest conditions upwards of 35 to 40 miles an hour along the coast. so sand blowing along the great highway pour sure and a rough day out there. raw certainly along the coast. here's the setup for the next couple of days. most of the showers will be offshore today. but as we get into tomorrow afternoon and the low sets up over the ocean here, we will get more moisture pulled up. with that, the possibility, the better chance of some showers, even some thunderstorms in the sierra nevada.
